About Macrolane™
Gracefully shapes your body
Being beautiful is about being yourself. That means choosing the lifestyle and looks that highlight who you are. The same goes for your choice of beauty treatments. Macrolane™ gels, in a safe and simple injection treatment, restore your skin's natural tone and volume. It gracefully shapes your body and instantly restores lost volume for a look that is natural and individual for you.
Macrolane was developed by Q-Med, the company that created Restylane™ for the esthetic treatment of the face. While Restylane is used to restore smoothness and volume to the face, Macrolane does the same for the body. If you have areas of your body where you would like to add volume or tone, ask your doctor if Macrolane treatment is right for you.
How it works
Less invasive than surgery, Macrolane™ treatment restores volume simply and safely. Treatment with Macrolane is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in one visit without a hospital stay. During the treatment, the NASHA™ gel is injected with a special needle deep under the skin to add volume and support, leaving no unsightly scars. While local anesthesia is most preferred, you may choose general anesthesia if you wish.
The gel used is a man-made version of the substance your body produces to fill out skin tone and lubricate joints. Because of this, your body will naturally biodegrade the gel over time. This process is very gradual and is not noticeable on a day-to-day basis. Macrolane™ was formulated to provide noticeable results that last for at least a year. Of course, results may vary for each individual.
After your treatment
With Macrolane™ you will be able to see the results instantly. And there is no long drawn-out recovery period. Once the treatment is completed you can return to your normal daily routine immediately.
To ensure the best possible outcome, your doctor will advise you to avoid any activity such as massage that could put pressure on the treatment area for the first few weeks. During this time it is also advised to avoid exposing the area to extremes in temperature (such as a sauna or tanning bed). Some redness, swelling, tenderness or pain is normal. You should contact your doctor if it persists.
Is Macrolane right for me?
Only a qualified physician can tell you if Macrolane is right for you. We recommend consulting a physician who is properly trained and certified for treatment with Macrolane.
Questions & Answers
What studies have been done with Macrolane™ gels?
The safety and effectiveness of NASHA™ gel as in Macroiane have been established in clinical studies. In addition, one study to investigate the use of Macroiane on body depressions demonstrated safety and effectiveness. No serious side effects or reactions were encountered. A new study is currently under way to further investigate applications and provide insights into injection techniques. Also under way are studies to investigate the use of Macroiane in the female breast.
Is Macrolane an approved product?
Yes. Macrolane has received approval for CE marking in the European Union (EU) and hence fulfills the relevant requirements for medical device products sold in Europe.
How is the Macrolane™ range different from the Restylane™ range?
The products of the Restylane and Macrolane ranges are NASHA™ gels with different consistencies reflecting their different intended uses. Restylane gels are designed for use in the face and for smaller, more superficial treatments. Macrolane is a thicker gel designed for use in the body where larger areas of volume restoration are desired.
How does Macrolane compare to fat injection?
Your own fat can be transplanted from one part of your body to another to add volume. This involves one surgical procedure to remove the fat and a second procedure to inject it. The benefit is that your own fat will not be rejected by your body's immune system. Since Macrolane is based on a substance similar to the one that occurs naturally in your body, it is also biocompatible The advantage of treatment with Macrolane is that fat does not need to be extracted from your body. This is particularly significant if you don't have enough excess fat to transplant.
How does Macrolane™ compare to synthetic fillers on the market?
Synthetic materials based on polymers other than hyaluronic acid can also be injected to add volume. Synthetic fillers cannot be absorbed by the body and are difficult to remove once injected. Since the body biodegrades the main ingredient found in Macrolane, there have been no reports of rejection or allergic reactions. Likewise, Macrolane can be gradually biodegraded through existing natural processes in the body.
How long is the effect meant to last?
The effect of Macrolane is not permanent. The gel injected during treatment will gradually be biodegraded by the body over time. Results are intended to last for at least a year.
